An Unexamined Life. This now famous line, which socrates spoke at his trial, has rippled throughout western civilization. If i could sum up socrates’s legacy in one maxim, it would be this quote.

Fyodor dostoevsky defines examined lifelike human’s resistance from evil and misery. Socrates believed that living a life where you live under the rules of others, in a continuous routine without examining what you actually want out of it is not worth living. It certainly is, for socrates, that human happiness, necessarily much lower than that of the gods, but on the contrary “a life unexamined is not worth living” (plato, apology).
